Belva Ann Lockwood could not vote, but she could seek public office. The Equal Rights Party nominated her as its candidate for president in 1884 and 1888.
Lockwood’s platform focused on women’s rights issues, particularly suffrage, temperance, and reform for divorce and marriage laws.
Although she was not elected, Lockwood maintained a successful career in law. She was the first woman to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court and successfully argued for Cherokee land rights.
This photograph of Lockwood, c. 1880 by Benjamin Joseph Falk, is in our @smithsoniannpg. The museum opens "Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence" on March 29.

Thank you for showcasing such an amazing woman from history! We might be biased, however; she's a local hero! If our library had been around when she was growing up, she would have been one of our patrons!

It's all about to change. But keep in mind those who are running for President now are still in 'the image' of the patriarchal system especially in #NY #CA

Thank you for sharing these things. I wish I had known or been taught about these things as a youngster in school. Fascinating!
