Teresa Carreño had recently emigrated from Venezuela when she played her first public piano recital in New York in 1862. The next year she played for President Lincoln at the White House.
Continuing her musical studies in Europe in 1866, Carreño went on to make the successful transition from child prodigy to adult performer whose virtuosity and power earned her the title "the Valkyrie of the piano." Carreño spent her life performing, composing and conducting. She composed about 75 works, and also traveled to Venezuela to organize, conduct and sing in an opera company. She continued to perform on the concert stage until just weeks before her death.
