No, this Auckland green gecko wasn’t just drinking a blue raspberry slushie. In fact, his vibrantly-colored mouth serves as a shocking deterrent for predators. In the face of danger, these geckos will gape their mouths and reveal their blue tongues in an attempt to scare off anything that threatens them. This particular gecko is approximately 20 years old and lives at the @Wellington.Zoo. His name is Long Stripe and he’s a very sweet boy, but a little shy.
The geckos at Wellington Zoo are ambassadors for their species as well as the environments they naturally live in. By connecting with a live animal and learning about the species, visitors have the chance to become crusaders for that species, and hopefully will become proactive in maintaining suitable environments for them to thrive.
