Here’s the reality: when I was a kid I would always say “where will I be after I’ve been climbing for 5, 10, 15, 20 years...”
Nobody told me burnout would be possible. Because with psych like mine, how could it?! But through all of those years there were always some crux or two to work through. “I don’t want to compete anymore but then where’s my place in climbing?” Or “I feel good in life when I’m doing well in climbing,” but then what happens if I don’t climb well?
At years 19 and 20 my motivation dwindled. My self motivation decreased, my shoulder hurt all of the time and so when I was motivated it quickly got shut down, I didn’t know where to turn. I had lost that passion.
Passion and enjoyment are a couple reasons why I climb today. It challenges me physically, mentally and emotionally. I can inspire and teach others. It brings me to beautiful places. I keep meeting some of my favorite people.
And as I’ve always said, it helps me calm down, reminds me to take a deep breath, and melts away all my worries, even if for a brief second. All is well in the world when I’m having fun with climbing. And at year 20, that’s my latest goal.
