In the 1930s, Blanche Calloway and Her Orchestra—which was all men—was considered one of the best groups in the country. She wrote “Rhythm in the River,” “I Need Loving” and “Growling Dan,” and recorded multiple pieces.  Calloway faced racism and sexism in the music industry and while on tour. She had to play for segregated audiences and when she performed in the same lively style that helped Cab succeed, it challenged the notions of how women should perform.  It became difficult for Calloway to make a living, and she left the stage. For the later decades of her life, she was active in civic causes while working as a disc jockey at a Florida radio station.
