Doris M. Cochran was the first woman curator at our Division of Reptiles and Amphibians, where she worked from 1919 to 1968.
Her main interests were the reptiles and amphibians of Central and South America and of the West Indies, especially Haiti. She made two field trips to the region, and collected more than 3,000 frog specimens from Brazil, Colombia, Peru and elsewhere.
One of her books, "Living Amphibians of the World," has been translated into six languages.
She's holding a frog in this 1934 photo in our @smithsonianarchives, which holds Cochran's papers, including her notes and travelogues.
