Today in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. The day before, he delivered a speech in Memphis, Tennessee where he declared, "I've been to the mountaintop [and] I've seen the promised land." He continued, "I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land."
Artist Romare Bearden paid homage to that speech and a fallen leader in this portrait, "Martin Luther King, Jr. - Mountain Top," in our @smithsoniannpg.

I remember thinking in 1968, that the world must be coming to an end. So many unnerving events in a very short amount of time....MLK and RFK murders and street-filled protests about Vietnam and civil rights. A very unstable year.
