Legs are super sore, so it was nice to move slow today and focus on contractions. Love squats!!

You’ll notice that there’s a breathing pattern I normally follow when doing heavy lifts. At this point I don’t even think about it. It’s second nature. Breath-work is HUGE when it comes to optimizing performance. Figuring out the best breathing patterns for oxygenation, core engagement, and muscle contraction will increase your efficiency, endurance, and ability to produce power.

Squatting breath-work tip: Take a big inhale at the top of the squat before you descend. Hold it for the eccentric portion (as you go down) for core engagement. Exhale on the concentric portion (as you push up). If you hiss through your teeth on the exhale, it may help fire up your core even more. For a more explosive movement, like a jump or a strike, I often push air out and make a “hah” noise. Any time you want to produce power, you should exhale forcefully with it.
