What differentiates yoga from exercise is the spiritual intention. Asana is a physical practice aimed at opening a door in your heart and mind to the deepest truth. But, you are the one who decides. When you practice yoga with your heart set on deep and lasting peace, you’ll eventually find it. When you practice the shapes of the poses with your heart set on a material goal, you’ll get that too. _ It’s not that the physical doesn’t matter. It does. This body you have is precious, it provides a unique field of experience for the mind and the soul. All the amazing things about the yoga body are, however, actually just side-effects. You happen to develop strong arm muscles while you work arm balances. You happen to develop your back while you do backbends and twists. You happen to develop your core as you jump back. You happen to cleanse and detox in the forward fold. While these are all amazing, none of these physical manifestations are the heart of the practice. _ Yoga is defined by the search for deep, eternal peace, true lasting happiness, an immersion in the universal grandness of the Divine. If you had to choose between a perfect handstand and ultimate bliss, choose bliss. If you choose bliss you’ll probably get them both. But, if you choose the handstand maybe you don’t get either. _ Ayurveda is a science of health and so complimentary to the yoga practice.
